Insurance Status of Patients Admitted to Specialty Cardiac and Competing General Hospitals

This study finds that patients with generous insurance were 20 percent more likely to be admitted to specialty hospitals than similar patients with less generous insurance. Transfer rates among the two types of hospitals, however, were not statistically significant.

Outcomes Following Coronary Stenting in the Era of Bare-Metal vs the Era of Drug-Eluting Stents

June 25, 2008 | Journal Article

Past studies have raised concerns that drug-eluting stents, in comparison to bare-metal stents, may contribute to stent thromboses. This observational study of approximately 60,000 Medicare patients did not support this finding, and found no increased risk of death or ST-elevation myocardial infarction for patients receiving drug-eluting stents.

Inducible Ischemia and the Risk of Recurrent Cardiovascular Events in Outpatients with Stable Coronary Heart Disease

July 14, 2008 | Journal Article

In this study, the researchers attempt to compare the risk of recurrent coronary heart disease in outpatients with angina or inducible ischemia. Patients with stable coronary heart disease and inducible ischemia were found to have a poorer prognosis for adverse outcomes than others and therefore may benefit from more proactive treatment therapies.

Integration of Depression and Hypertension Treatment

July 1, 2008 | Journal Article

This article examines whether integrating depression treatment into care for hypertension improves adherence to antidepressant and antihypertensive medications, depression outcomes and blood pressure control among older primary care patients.

Evaluating Options for Measurement of Neighborhood Socioeconomic Context

September 1, 2008 | Journal Article

Socioeconomic characteristics of a neighborhood have been associated with the health of its residents. The authors examine a group of neighborhoods in Washington state to discover that education-based measurements are the strongest predictors for the risk of myocardial infarction.

N-Terminal Fragment of the Prohormone Brain-Type Natriuretic Peptide (NT-proBNP), Cardiovascular Events, and Mortality in Patients with Stable Coronary Heart Disease

January 10, 2007 | Journal Article

Use of a blood test for NT-proBNP level may help physicians identify patients at high risk for coronary heart disease.

Use of Generic Cardiovascular Medications by Elderly Medicare Beneficiaries Receiving Generalist or Cardiologist Care
