The most consistent priority of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has been to expand access to medical care for underserved individuals, a disproportionate number of whom live in rural areas. The Foundation has employed a number of approaches to improve health services for people living in rural areas. As a result of her work, the hospital's charges increased from $9 million to $11 million a year initially and eventually went up to $14 million, says Curtis, adding, "That's the bottom line."

During the enrichment program, Jackson spent half of each day in the classroom, and the other half-day at the Natchez Regional Medical Center, shadowing staff in a different department each week. After completing the program, she went on to pursue a graduate degree in biological science.
