An assessment of RWJF's tobacco work over 20 years.
Although tobacco use has decreased, it is the leading cause of death in the United States. Implementing a combination of policy changes including clean indoor air laws, higher per-pack taxes, and cessation efforts are proven to reduce tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke.

In 1996, the federal government mandated that states enforce laws that prohibit the sale of cigarettes to minors. This research assesses whether increased enforcement helped lower the rate of smoking among youths.

From 2001 to January 2009, three organizations worked to strengthen and expand their roles in advocating for tobacco prevention and control at the national, state and local levels within communities of color. The University of Massachusetts Medical Center evaluated the implementation of the Synar Amendment, which required states seeking federal substance abuse block grants to enact and enforce laws prohibiting the sale of tobacco to minors.

The Center for Media Education surveyed 300 tobacco and alcohol Web sites, and analyzed the commercial content of more than 100 sites to determine how these companies use online technologies to promote their products.

The Lehigh Valley Hospital worked to strengthen efforts between two local coalitions: the Coalition for a Smoke-Free Valley, which focused on reducing adult and youth tobacco use, and the ALERT Partnership, which focused on illegal drug and alcohol issues.
