The Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention (CTRI) was founded in 1992 when research on the treatment of tobacco dependence was in its infancy.
Although tobacco use has decreased, it is the leading cause of death in the United States. Implementing a combination of policy changes including clean indoor air laws, higher per-pack taxes, and cessation efforts are proven to reduce tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke.
