Decisions to refer children with GERD to surgery are most often based on physician preferences.

Pediatric patients who have severe gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) may be referred by a physician to have an anti-reflux procedure (ARP). Differences in clinicians’ perceptions of the risks and benefits of such a procedure, not disease prevalence, account for wide variations hospital ARP rates.
