Getting Out the Word on the Benefits of the Affordable Care Act

Raising awareness of low-income people and communities of color about the benefits and how to access coverage

    • September 11, 2013

Dates of Project: December 2011 – December 2012

Families USA worked with the media to raise awareness among low-income people and communities of color on new health insurance options under the Affordable Care Act.

Description: Although low-income people and communities of color are likely to benefit the most from the Affordable Care Act (ACA) of 2010, this will only happen if they know how to access the affordable health insurance made available through the act.  Reaching these groups about past coverage expansions was difficult.

Families USA expanded its print and video story bank about individuals’ struggles to obtain or keep health insurance; increased media coverage (including by ethnic media) about the benefits of the ACA for low-income people and communities of color; trained minority journalists on covering the ACA; and sponsored several events.
