Medicine's Role in Creating a National Culture of Health

To build healthier communities, the medical establishment needs to think beyond the front door of the hospital, said RWJF President and CEO Risa Lavizzo-Mourey in the 10th annual Miller Lecture, hosted by the Center for Innovative Medicine at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. The quality of health, Lavizzo-Mourey maintained, is strongly influenced by the places in which people live, work, and play.

Lavizzo-Mourey encouraged her audience to think in new ways, and she quoted Stephen Shortell, PhD, MPH, dean of the School of Public Health at the University of California-Berkeley: "It is now the responsibility of clinicians and health care delivery organizations to help maintain the health of the community—and the responsibility of the community to help maintain the health of the individual.”
