Exploring Potential Research Contributions to Policy

The Salud America! Experience

Researchers use a conceptual framework to analyze Salud America! projects.

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation-funded Salud America! pilot projects (20) set research priorities to address Latino childhood obesity at society, community, school, family, and individual levels. While project staff were responsible for identifying potential policy contributions of their efforts, few investigators had formal training related to policy.

To engage researchers in the policy process, the projects were plotted to the previously developed Policy Contribution Spectra linking the three interrelated other spectrums—science/evaluation, policy, and public—in order to enable policy contributions.

Policy contributions require multiple strategies at multiple levels with multiple stakeholders simultaneously. The Policy Contribution Spectra makes research more accessible to those stakeholders.
