Uneven Playing Field--Effective Strategies to Address Health Inequity Through Active Living Research

A Commentary to Accompany the Active Living Research Supplement to Annals of Behavioral Medicine

Prevention of childhood obesity, particularly among African American females, is one of many campaigns that the Active Living Research (ALR) community is focused on as it builds effective, sustainable strategies.

The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) officially became involved in the childhood obesity prevention and advocacy battle in 2009. Today, their continued efforts are asking for assistance from the ALR community. Evidence supporting the fight against childhood obesity and what role effective policies and programs play in this fight, are only going to help—not hamper—national associations like the NAACP educate community leaders.

The ALR movement is continuing to build evidence, and as it does, the research collaboration is helping serve multiple communities and address health inequities. Combining efforts just like the one between NAACP and ALR will only help fight the battle against childhood obesity more effectively.
