School Sport Participation Under Two School Sport Policies

Comparisons by Race/Ethnicity, Gender, and Socioeconomic Status

This article examines participation in school sports with contrasting sport programs: intramural versus interscholastic.

In contrast to the competitive nature of interscholastic sports, intramurals are designed around participation, encouraging athletes of all abilities. Data from an online survey was obtained from middle school students (ages 11 to 14) at four public middle schools in a southeastern city.

Key Finding:

  • Race and gender were important predictors of participation in intramural schools, and socioeconomic status was a more important predictor of participation in interscholastic programs.

Overall, the results in this article show that intramural sports offer a promising strategy to increase physical activity among middle school students. The researchers also state that intramural sports are an effective tactic for increasing participation among those in low-income, racial minority, and rural communities.
