New Connections Hosts Sixth Annual Research and Coaching Clinic
New Connections hosted its sixth annual Research and Coaching Clinic in National Harbor, Md., November 2–4, 2012. Grantees, alumni, and network members participated in coaching sessions focused on writing for grant funding and manuscript development. Additional sessions addressed the mind-body connection and the importance of collaboration in professional and career development.

Center for Health Policy at Meharry Medical College Announces 2013 National Scholars’ Lecture Series
The Center for Health Policy at Meharry Medical College will host some of the nation’s most prominent health policy and social science experts for the 2013 Current Issues in Health Policy Seminar Series. The series familiarizes students with current and substantive key issues in health policy with an emphasis on economics, sociology, and political science.

The scholars invited to speak include: James Blumstein, MA, LLB, Vanderbilt University professor of Law; Kavita Patel, MD, MS, managing director of the Engelberg Center for Health Care Reform, Brookings Institution, and an alumna (’03) of the Clinical Scholars program; Gail C. Christopher, DN, vice president of Program Strategy, W.K. Kellogg Foundation; Lisa Simpson, MB, BCh, MPH, chief executive officer of AcademyHealth and national advisory committee member of the Clinical Scholars program; Anne C. Beal, MD, MPH, chief operating officer of the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute; Julianne Malveaux, PhD, renowned economist, author and columnist; Gordon H. DeFriese, PhD, Professor of Social Medicine and Epidemiology Emeritus at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill; and Paula D. McClain, PhD, Dean and vice provost of graduate education at Duke University.

New Connections Hosts Regional Meeting
New Connections hosted an informative and engaging regional meeting focused on “Promoting the Health and Development of Young Men of Color” on Oct. 16, 2012, at the Inn at Penn on the University of Pennsylvania campus. The keynote speaker was Howard Stevenson, PhD, associate professor at the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education. A panel of New Connections grantees and alumni presented their research as well: Antwi Akom, PhD; Rodney Haring, PhD, L-MSW; Enrique Neblett, PhD; and Alexander Vigo, PhD.
