The Institute of Medicine (IOM) report released last year, “The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health,” emphasizes the central role of nurses in providing high-quality patient care. Risa Lavizzo-Mourey, MD, MBA, president and CEO of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, released this guest editorial, “The Nurse Education Imperative,” in the March 2012 issue of Nursing Outlook, reaffirming these findings.

Lavizzo-Mourey outlines the growing need for nurses to be educated at the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) level and beyond, which benefits health care organizations and ensures a competent and skilled health care workforce in the future.
