Preparing Clinically Expert Faculty Educators

An Academic Partnership Model

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s (RWJF) New Jersey Nursing Initiative (NJNI) aims to prepare graduate nursing students to become clinically expert faculty to address, in part, the shortage of faculty to teach nursing students. This article details the program’s partnership between three New Jersey institutions that prepared 14 scholars for nurse faculty roles.

Bloomfield College, Fairleigh Dickinson University Adult Nurse practitioner program, and Monmouth University Nursing Education program collaborated in this partnership. Using the National League for Nursing nurse educator competencies, the program provided enhanced education courses and intensive teaching practicum. The RWJF NJNI scholars were given opportunities to participate in the faculty role from the beginning of the program.

Key findings:

  • Fourteen scholars were admitted and enrolled in the competitive scholarship program. Two were African American and two were male.
  • Four participants graduated in May 2011. The remaining 10 scholars were on track to graduate in May 2012.
  • Two of the scholars graduating in May 2011 secured faculty positions.

Progress was made towards the main goals of the program, including the number of advanced practice nurses who are prepared to teach in the New Jersey program; sustaining collaborative partnerships among institutions; increasing minority faculty and students; providing opportunities for the scholars to be immersed in the faculty role; and providing mentoring and role modeling.
