Surging Hospital Employment of Physicians Poses Opportunities and Challenges

In a market already notable for high rates of physician employment, the two largest hospital systems in Greenville and neighboring Spartanburg have continued to greatly increase employment in recent years. The hospital systems are employing more physicians, particularly primary care physicians, with an eye toward capturing referrals and admissions—especially in the growing community of Greer, where both major systems are vying for dominance.

While the two major hospital systems predict improvements in care coordination, quality, and safety, others in the community are concerned that increased hospital-physician alignment may give the systems greater leverage to negotiate higher payment rates from health plans, ultimately resulting in higher health care costs for area patients.
