Covering Children at the Top of Public Priorities for Health Reform

First Focus, a bipartisan children’s advocacy organization, commissioned a survey to gauge Americans’ support for provisions that may be included in final health reform legislation currently being considered by Congress. The survey found that 89 percent of respondents supported a provision to provide health coverage to all children. This survey also indicates that a provision to cover all kids would encounter little dissent from the American electorate, as only 10 percent of respondents said they opposed it. Other notable findings included:

  • 88% supported tax credits for small businesses to defray the cost of providing health benefits to workers.
  • 82% supported allowing young adults up to age 26 to continue coverage on their parents’ health plan.
  • 73% supported prohibiting insurers from discriminating against those with pre-existing conditions.
  • 80% supported establishing a health insurance exchange for consumers to more easily shop for coverage plans.
