Educating key audiences about FDA regulation of tobacco products

The Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids launched a national campaign to educate policy-makers, the media, opinion leaders and the public about why Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authority over tobacco products was needed and what it would mean and to highlight the broad public support for legislation requiring FDA regulation.

Key Results

  • Through polling, paid advertising, media relations and grassroots organizing, the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids emphasized the importance of FDA regulation over tobacco products. Partly as a result of its educational campaign:

    • The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act was signed into law on June 22, 2009, giving the FDA authority to regulate tobacco.
    • More than 1,000 organizations endorsed the legislation. By the time the legislation reached the floor of the U.S. Senate in June 2009, it had the support of 1,018 national, regional and state public health; faith-based; and other organizations.
    • A substantial majority of the American public supported federal legislation giving the FDA authority to regulate tobacco. By disseminating polling results, the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids highlighted the broad-based support for FDA regulation.
    • Media attention to the issue of FDA regulation over tobacco remained high and increased during the grant period.
