TCAB in the Curriculum

Nursing students need to be taught the guiding principles of Transforming Care at the Bedside (TCAB), a nurse-led, quality improvement program, from the first day of nursing school so that their entire education prepares them to work in a collaborative, adaptive environment centered on patient care, according to Deborah Struth, associate director of quality improvement and curriculum at The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Shadyside School of Nursing. But, writing in a special supplement to the American Journal of Nursing, Struth says UPMC-Shadyside’s experience as a TCAB education partner also suggests the nursing school itself has to be transformed first, adopting the TCAB principles into the school’s operations and creating TCAB champions among the faculty.
