Synopsis of the Work: After School: Connecting Children at Risk With Responsible Adults to Help Reduce Youth Substance Abuse and Other Health-Compromising Behaviors was a national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation that helped develop intermediary organizations in Boston, Chicago, and the San Francisco Bay Area in order to create citywide systems of after-school programs.
This sidebar describes the three intermediaries, which are neutral, independent organizations with the resources and focus to bring key players from many sectors to the table and generate broad community support:
- Boston After School & Beyond brought key players from the public and private sectors together to coordinate and build on existing youth programs.
- Chicago's After School Matters forged an alliance among three historically turf-protective departments—schools, parks, and libraries—to create after- school programs for teenagers.
- Team-Up for Youth partnered with professional sports stars and youth development experts to bring quality after-school sports programs to young people in the San Francisco Bay Area.
