Issues and Implications of Screening, Surveillance, and Reporting of Children's BMI
In January 2008, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) convened a forum of researchers and practitioners working on the issue of childhood obesity to discuss the issues related to surveillance, screening and reporting of children's BMI. At the forum, a discussion followed the presentation of each paper.
The authors of this article sought to capture the most salient points raised during the discussion. As a result, many of these points were not considered in the articles that comprise the Pediatrics supplement, but are highly relevant to the screening, surveillance and reporting of BMI.
Key areas for discussion included:
- Measuring body fat surveillance of children’s BMI;
- Clinical use of BMI;
- Communicating about children’s BMI; and
- School-based obesity-screening programs.
