Workplace culture and environments varied from institution to institution in the “Wisdom at Work: Retaining Experienced Nurses” study. Taking into account unique workplace environments, and developing policies and practices that create new opportunities for employees, had positive outcomes for hospitals and best-practice organizations. 

Successful initiatives include a “Reserves at the Ready” program that allows retired employees to return to work when their expertise is needed and remain engaged with the organization on a long-term basis. Developing an organization-wide “culture of aging,” where experienced employees are highly regarded and their expertise is sought-after generated positive results for one “best practice” organization, and another improved retention by offering training opportunities in new medical and informational technology to its nurses. As an alternative environment for critical care practice, one hospital introduced a virtual intensive care unit, where experienced RNs could monitor developments from afar, in less demanding conditions, to bolster employee retention.
