Measures of the Food and Physical Activity Environment: Instruments

This article presents the conclusions of a work group charged with improving instrumentation to assess food and activity environments. The paper identifies key challenges and makes recommendations to improve instrumentation in this field.

Recommendations:

  • Establish a repository for food and activity environment instrumentation that is regularly updated and interactive.
  • Increase instrumentation data sharing to test and improve current instrumentation.
  • Evaluate instrumentation to identify the best available instruments to assess change in food and activity environments.

The field of research around food and physical environments is young and actively growing. A more robust set of measurement instruments will strengthen this field's contributions to population health.
