Field of Work: Reducing social isolation in a low-income community
Synopsis of the Work: In this initiative, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation supported Shreveport-Bossier Community Renewal to reduce social isolation in distressed areas of Shreveport, La., and adjacent Bossier City and to disseminate its model of renewal to other cities. Shreveport-Bossier Community Renewal is a faith-based, non-profit organization in Shreveport.
Story Told: Building a caring community requires caring staff members such as Tina Sheffield and Manuela Standard, community coordinators for Shreveport-Bossier Community Renewal in the Barksdale Annex area of Bossier City. The two women oversee activities in a community center and also take "prayer walks" (praying with people and offering sympathy, encouragement and direction) to reach people on their streets and in their homes. "It's a full-time mission," says Sheffield. This sidebar tells their story.
