Field of Work: Hospital organizational culture.
Synopsis of the Work: Transforming Hospital Culture was a national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation in which 10 hospitals documented their stories of improving their organizational culture, with the goal of helping other hospitals understand how to create and sustain culture change in their institutions.
Humility of Mary Health Partners, a two-hospital Catholic health system in Youngstown Ohio, was one of the participating hospitals. Its transformation effort focused on alleviating dissatisfaction among nurses and included a shift to a model that allowed nurses to participate in and help solve problems that affected their work. This sidebar describes the changes made and their mixed results in improving the culture.
