Field of Work: Reducing social isolation in a low-income community
Synopsis of the Work: In this initiative, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation supported Shreveport-Bossier Community Renewal to reduce social isolation in distressed areas of Shreveport, La., and adjacent Bossier City and to disseminate its model of renewal to other cities. Shreveport-Bossier Community Renewal is a faith-based, non-profit organization in Shreveport.
Story Told: Margaret Myles works hard to improve her community as a volunteer with Shreveport-Bossier Community Renewal. The 79-year old woman turned a weedy lot into the flower-filled "Cedar Grove Garden of Love," hosts monthly breakfasts open to anyone in the neighborhood, and at age 76, became a student in the program's Adult Renewal Academy. This sidebar tells her story.
