Cost Effectiveness of Community-Based Physical Activity Interventions

Seven interventions that promote physical activity are cost-effective and have a significant impact on quality of life and health.

What researchers found: Seven interventions to encourage physical activity among adults reduced disease incidence and were cost-effective. These interventions compare favorably with other public health strategies.

Why we chose this publication: Most adults do not get enough exercise. Public health interventions to encourage exercise are effective.

What researchers studied: This analysis selected seven one-year interventions that promoted increased physical activity. Each intervention was either a communitywide campaign, individually adapted, part of a social support approach, or focused on enhanced access. The researchers developed a simulation model to estimate the impact of these interventions. Based on the simulations, the cost-effectiveness of each intervention was calculated.
