Learning to Recognize Hospital System Problems

Piloting the use of simulation for training hospital surveyors to help them recognize system vulnerabilities that underlie sentinel events

From 2005 to 2007, the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations developed a simulation training course to enable its surveyors to recognize system vulnerabilities that threaten patient safety and the quality of care. Surveyors conduct the inspections used in accrediting and certifying hospitals and other health care organizations.

Key Results:

  • The project developed two versions of a simulation training course—one for hospitals and one for other health care organizations.
  • Some 790 surveyors completed the simulation training course at the commission's 2006 and 2007 annual surveyor training conferences.
