Experts in Heart Failure and Palliative Medicine Form Collaborative Research Network to Enhance Care

Conference on supportive care in end-stage heart disease

Experts in heart failure, palliative medicine and related fields promoted supportive and palliative care for advanced heart failure patients through research and improvement in clinical care.

The project was part of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's (RWJF) national program Targeted End-of-Life Projects Initiative.

Key Results: The project staff:

  • Convened two conferences.
  • Developed a consensus statement and publishing it in the Journal of Cardiac Failure (2004).
  • Created a collaborative research network (Palliative Care—Heart Failure Education And Research Trials [PCHEART]).
  • Developed the infrastructure, a Web site and initial research projects for PCHEART. PCHEART included 64 investigators and providers from 26 academic and clinical medical centers with heart failure research and treatment, palliative care and hospice programs (as of December 2004).
