Engaging Coalitions to Improve Health and Health Care

In this chapter, Laura Leviton, a senior program officer, and Elaine Cassidy, a former program officer, at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, examine the Foundation’s efforts to build and strengthen community coalitions as a way of bringing about social change. They not only examine what has worked and what has not worked but also explore some central issues, such as the kinds of social change that are suitable for coalitions, the kinds of membership appropriate for coalitions, and the factors that contribute to a coalition’s working effectively.
