Milwaukee Hospital Develops Web-Based Pediatric Asthma Tracking System and Educational Program for Emergency Department Visits
Managing Pediatric Asthma: Emergency Department Demonstration Program
A collaboration named Emergency Department Allies brought together Children's Hospital and Health System and five collaborating hospitals in the Milwaukee area to develop a tracking system to monitor emergency department pediatric asthma care.
Project staff also conducted a randomized clinical trial to evaluate two emergency department-based education and treatment interventions to help asthma patients and parents.
The project was part of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) national program Managing Pediatric Asthma: Emergency Department Demonstration Program (for more information see Program Results).
Key Results and Findings:
- The project implemented a Web-based, password-protected system that collected data on 3,302 emergency department pediatric asthma patients in its first 18 months of operation and remained ongoing at the end of the grant period.
- The clinical trial demonstrated no important benefits for patients in either of the two intervention groups.
