Dartmouth Researchers Find that Multiple Measures Over Time Give Best Guide to Physician Performance
Measuring physician-level quality: Applying innovative methodology to state-of-the-art data
From March 2003 through February 2004, researchers at the Dartmouth College Department of Economics and the Social Policy and Health Economics Research and Evaluation Institute (SPHERE) collaborated to develop more accurate measures of physician performance.
Key Findings
- Examining a physician's performance across a range of performance measures over time is feasible and leads to more reliable and accurate evaluation of the quality of care physicians provide than looking at single measures of performance.
- This method yielded better estimates of the physician's future performance than individual measures of physician performance.
