Providers' Assessment of Barriers to Effective Management of Hypertension and Hyperlipidemia in Community Health Centers

Little is known about the challenges community health centers (CHCs) face in providing quality care for hypertension and hyperlipidemia. This study reports results from 251 providers on perceptions of barriers to effective management of these conditions. Survey respondents were from 72 Midwest CHCs in the professions of licensed practical nurses, registered nurses, physicians and physician assistants.

Key Findings:

The majority of providers stated hypertension and hyperlipidemia health indicator levels that met or exceeded national guidelines.
Most providers agreed on the importance of medical management and lifestyle modification, however, few providers agreed that patients held similar beliefs.
Some providers also stated barriers such as difficulty of adherence to lifestyle modifications, financial problems, psychosocial factors and limited time and resources.
