Restructured "Philanthropy for Active Civic Engagement" Shifts Mission to Promote Civic Engagement
Building support for local and national service programs
From April 1998 through May 2004, the Grantmaker Forum on Community & National Service (now Philanthropy for Active Civic Engagement), Berkeley, Calif., formalized its structure and revised its mission.
The organization shifted its mission from trying to increase support for community service and volunteerism to the broader goal of increasing philanthropy's investment and interest in and support of civic engagement strategies.
Key Results
The Grantmaker Forum:
- Worked to increase philanthropic involvement in and support for service and volunteerism programs through improved external communications and better promotion of events and publications.
- Formed several partnerships that led to new policy-related activities.
- Established a direct-mail database comprised of more than 2,600 individuals, including grantmakers, elected officials, state service commissioners and directors and representatives of the media, nonprofit organizations and government agencies.
- Established a Web site.
Funding
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) supported the project with two grants totaling $374,368 between April 1998 and May 2004.
