Examination of Family Caregivers' Roles Leads to Book Outlining New Policy Recommendations

Producing a book and paper on measuring the scope of family caregiver activities

Staff from the United Hospital Fund of New York brought together a working group of researchers, clinicians, policy-makers and family caregiver advocates to produce an analysis leading to the development of more accurate measures of the work performed by family caregivers.

Key Results

  • Produced the book Family Caregivers on the Job: Moving Beyond ADLs and IADLs, which includes the five papers commissioned under the first grant, a sixth paper written as a concluding chapter for the book, and the synthesis paper based on the results of the working group meetings.
  • Published the synthesis paper, "Family Caregivers on the Job: Moving Beyond ADLs and IADLs," in the peer-reviewed journal Generations: Journal of the American Society on Aging.

Funding

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) provided $101,563 from February 2001 through December 2002 for this project. It supported the production of six papers based on the working group's discussions.

Following completion of the project, RWJF provided an additional grant of $38,913 to support the production of a book containing the papers commissioned during the first grant. The second grant ran from February 2003 through June 2004.
