2004 Annual Report President's Message: Holding the Needle on True North

Leading the Quest for Quality Care

In the President's Message of the RWJF 2004 annual report, Risa Lavizzo-Mourey, M.D., M.B.A., describes being on the front lines of patient care at a community health clinic in New Brunswick, N.J., a clinic that provides health care for thousands of the area's most vulnerable, low-income or uninsured families. These patients, she says, both energize and inspire her.

Lavizzo-Mourey remarks upon the Foundation's commitment to change America's troubled health care system until it delivers a level of quality care that meets the public's expectations of what they need and deserve.

“The barriers to change are as formidable as they are familiar. They are systemic, mostly of our own making, and have long blocked serious attempts to bring about needed change. In fact, we have become so used to them we act as if they are normal. But when you pile the barriers all in one place it is easy to see just how imposing a roadblock they make.”
