A number of chapters in the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Anthology series have attempted to demystify the practice of philanthropy by examining the internal workings of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF). This chapter, written by Joel R. Gardner, who has been doing an oral history of the Foundation, and Andrew R. Harrison, who serves as the Foundation's archivist, recounts the early years of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation—from 1936 through 1975.
