Continuous Quality Improvement as an Innovation
Which Nursing Facilities Adopt it?
There is preliminary evidence that the formal adoption of continuous quality improvement (CQI) in nursing homes contributes to improved clinical outcomes. This study identifies organizational factors that best predict formal CQI adoption. Data for the study comes from the New Jersey 1998 Nursing Homes Profiles Chart and from 159 nursing homes across New Jersey that responded to a mail administration of the Nursing Care Quality Improvement Survey.
Key Findings:
- 42 percent of nursing homes in the sample were classified as “adopters” of CQI, 44 percent were “nonadopters” and 14 percent were not categorized because of incomplete survey responses.
- A combination of six factors best predicted formal adoption of CQI: perceived lower intensity of general market competition; higher reported direct market competition; value of conformance with requirements or standards; perceived supportive organizational and structural resources; lower concern of time constraints; and reported management training in CQI principles.
