It's Not about the Bike - But it Could be about the Bike Path

Clearinghouse and resource center on increasing physically active communities

From 1999 to 2003, the National Center for Bicycling and Walking (previously the Bicycle Federation) created and fine tuned a Web-based clearinghouse and resource center for public health advocates and others interested in making communities more bicycle-friendly and walkable.

Key Results
Project staff reported the following accomplishments:

  • The staff established www.bikewalk.org, a Web-based clearinghouse and support center to assist public health agencies, organizations and professionals.
  • Project staff made 73 presentations to approximately 7,000 people at public health, transportation and land-use planning meetings around the country to increase awareness of public health/physical activity objectives.
  • Working with the New York State Department of Health, the staff conducted two "Pedestrian Road Shows," which are workshops focused on steps that can be taken to increase walking opportunities in communities.
  • The center sponsored a national conference on bicycle and pedestrian plans and activities, called "ProBike/ProWalk 2000," that took place September 5–8, 2000, in Philadelphia.
  • Acting as consultants, the staff assessed current activities of the CDC-funded State Physical Activity Program.

Funding
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) made two grants totaling $704,781 in support of this project from September 1999 to January 2003.
