Web-based database for tobacco dependence treatment

In 2001, the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco, Middleton, Wis., working in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO), unveiled a Web-based database on tobacco dependence treatment.

The society, an international non-profit organization whose mission is to stimulate the generation of new knowledge on nicotine and addiction, contracted with MediTech Media in London to develop and manage a Web site on tobacco dependence treatment.

  • The Web site serves as an evidence-based Internet resource for researchers, policy makers and practitioners working in the field of tobacco dependence treatment.

    Information on the Web site is organized into five subject areas:
    • Efficacy.
    • Safety.
    • Demographics and health effects.
    • Health economics.
    • Policy.

    Within these areas, the site provides key findings and recommendations, areas for further study, and a downloadable PowerPoint slide kit.

    The site also offers links to other relevant reports and Web sites. The information is intended for researchers, policymakers and program implementers around the world.

Funding

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) provided a grant of $226,800 to develop and maintain the database from December 2001 through June 2003.
