Campaign Encourages Jewish College Students and Adults to Put Out Their Cigarettes on Shabbat
Outreach and education to prevent smoking on the Sabbath
The National Jewish Outreach Program, a New York City organization that supports North American Jews in their faith, conducted an antismoking campaign called the "Shabbat Smokeout."
The campaign sought to encourage Jewish college students and adults not to smoke on Shabbat, the period of rest each week from sundown Friday until sundown Saturday.
Key Results:
- During 2001 and 2002, the grantee organization distributed to college students some 20,000 "candle packs" designed to look like a pack of cigarettes but containing Shabbat candles, the campaign's message ("Give your lungs a religious experience: This Shabbat light candles, not cigarettes.") and other resource information.
