Training Generalists Physicians for Underserved Rural North Carolina
Generalist Physician Initiative
From 1992 to 2002, staff at East Carolina University School of Medicine developed strategies and programs aimed at substantially increasing the output of generalists, particularly those with an interest in practicing in underserved areas.
The project was part of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) The Generalist Physician Initiative national program.
Key Results: By the end of the grant period:
- The percentages of East Carolina enrollees indicating an interest in primary care had increased from 46 percent (1991–1993 figures) to 74 percent.
- The average percentage of underrepresented minority enrollees at East Carolina also increased from 18 percent (1991–1993 figures) to 21.4 percent.
- Some 63 percent of East Carolina graduates in 1999 matched into generalist residency programs.
- From 1995 to 1999, a mean of 85.4 percent of residents in East Carolina's generalist residency programs began employment in primary care, exceeding the mean for the period 1991 to 1994.
