Philadelphia Medical School Turns to Educating Generalist Physicians
Generalist Physician Initiative
From 1992 to 2000, MCP Hahnemann University School of Medicine, formed by a 1993 merger of Hahnemann University School of Medicine and the Medical College of Pennsylvania (MCP) (and now Drexel University's College of Medicine), developed strategies for expanding opportunities for generalists, from pre-admissions through practice entry.
The project was part of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) The Generalist Physician Initiative national program.
Key Results:
- By the end of the grant period, 58 percent of the students from the first graduating class of the combined medical school (1999) entered one of the three generalist fields for residency training. This compared with averages in the early 1990s of 18 percent of Hahnemann graduates and 23 percent of MCP graduates entering generalist residency programs.
- The number of graduates of university-sponsored medicine and pediatrics residencies who chose to go directly into primary care practice increased between the start of the Generalist Physician Initiative and 1998.
