In New Hampshire, a National Role Model for Generalist Education
Generalist Physician Initiative
Dartmouth Medical School enhanced the generalist orientation of its curriculum to increase the number of generalist graduates.
This project was part of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation's (RWJF) Generalist Physician Initiative, a national program that challenged schools of medicine to increase the supply of general internists, general pediatricians and family practitioners that they were training.
Key Results: Under the Generalist Physician Initiative, the medical school accomplished the following:
- Developed strategies for recruiting students interested in becoming generalist physicians.
- Launched new residency programs in Family Medicine and Obstetrics and Gynecology.
- Instituted a new Primary Care Track in Internal Medicine.
- Developed a Board of Community Preceptors and a computer network to link these preceptors with Dartmouth.
- Created a new initiative to develop leadership skills for future generalists.
