Emergency Care at Fingertips of Elderly in Rural Arizona

Faith in Action: Replication of the Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers Program

During 1994 and 1995, staff at Verde Valley Caregivers Coalition in Sedona, Ariz., expanded a volunteer-run caregiver's coalition to serve more elderly people in the Sedona, Ariz., area, and expand its geographic reach.

The project was part of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers Program, Faith in Action®, Generation 2 and Generation 3 national program.

Key Results

  • Verde Valley Caregivers hired a full-time director and began serving nine additional towns in the area.

  • Verde Valley Caregivers added a new service of purchasing and installing electronic alarm units in the homes of clients who lived alone or were recovering from surgery and wished to have an automatic alarm service in case they had a medical emergency.

  • In all, project staff trained 112 additional volunteers who assisted 236 clients. About half of the time, volunteers provided transportation in an area where public transportation was nonexistent.
