A Computer in Every Office: Lack of time and increased costs are frequently cited as the barriers to bringing private providers of immunizations online with a registry. In South Carolina, where 50 percent of the immunizations are delivered in the private sector, SIIS queried private providers to determine their hardware needs, addressing a principal cost issue before it became a barrier. The registry team distributed 470 personal computers to 357 private practices across the state, and additional computers were to be distributed to the approximately 30 remaining practices that did not respond to the query. The registry's plans also anticipated training and data-entry needs of providers. Information resource consultants were hired in the state's 13 public health districts to provide in-office technical assessments, hardware and software installation, and ongoing technical support to providers. Funding was allocated for data entry for the largest providers.
