Marketing Blitz: Despite a 1995 mandate that providers report to the registry, the Baltimore registry, BIRP, had only 20 percent of its 130 private providers enrolled in June 1998. With 95 percent of immunizations given in the private sector, the completion of the registry required full participation of all providers. The registry launched an intensive recruitment campaign involving the majority of immunization department staff, with the goal of having all enrolled by end of 1998. Other registry activities were given lower priority to accomplish this goal. By June 2000, through one-on-one recruitment of providers, the registry successfully recruited more than 90 percent of the city's private providers. Registry staff recognizes that recruiting private providers is just half the battle: maintaining provider participation in a registry requires reducing provider burden and returning value-added information and services to participating providers.
