Initiative Drills Home the Importance of Academic Dentistry

Alliance-building between dental schools and university health sciences centers

The American Association of Dental Schools, now the American Dental Education Association worked with the nation's dental schools and leaders in the profession to strengthen the status of dentistry as a science-based profession.

Key Results

The Association accomplished the following under the grant:

  • Appointed two special groups to investigate two key issues emerging from its 1998 75th Anniversary Summit Conference: the Commission on the Cost of Education and the Task Force on Future Dental School Faculty.
  • Participated in a Dental Specialty Task Force, comprised of representatives of dental specialties, to address ways that the specialties could provide financial support to those pursuing academic careers.
  • Created the Center for Educational Policy and Research to guide and formulate educational policy for dental schools.
  • Established the Leadership Institute, a yearlong fellowship program, to train the nation's most promising dental faculty.

Funding

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) provided $50,000 in funding from January to December 1999 to support the project.
