From 1996 to 1998, staff at Oxford Health Plans, Inc., created its service credit banking program, called Partners In Caring, to assist Medicare members with nonmedical needs by recruiting and training community volunteers.
The program operated in Nassau and Suffolk counties on Long Island for three years and in Queens County during the third year of the program.
The project was part of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) Service Credit Banking in Managed Care national program.
- During the grant period, project staff trained 445 volunteers, who provided a total of 19,074 hours of service for eligible Medicare recipients.
- In 1998, Oxford transferred its Medicare plan to North Shore Jewish Hospital, and the Partners In Caring program was discontinued.
