National Database of Licensed Nurses Makes Tracking Workforce Issues Easier

Implementation of a national nurse information system

From 1990 through 1997, the Council of State Boards of Nursing developed the Nursing Information System, a database of detailed information on licensed nurses nationwide.

Key Results

During the grant period, the Council accomplished the following:

  • Developed policies regarding use, access and security of data.
  • Developed the software necessary to collect, store and release the data.
  • Developed a business plan that would make the database financially self-sustaining.

Funding

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) provided three grants totaling $1,108,826 from November 1990 to June 1997 to support the project.
