Foiling Drugs, Olympic Medalist Uses Fencing to Make a Point to Urban Youth

Enhancing the health of disadvantaged urban youth through a program of fencing, tutoring and mentoring

The Peter Westbrook Foundation (PWF), a non-profit organization, enhanced its program to enrich the lives of New York City's youth through the sport of fencing.

This grant enabled PWF to purchase new equipment and provide additional private fencing lessons for the members of the Elite Fencers Program. It also allowed PWF to enhance the tutoring program by allowing tutors to spend more time with the students.

Key Results:

  • The program enhancement had an important positive impact on students' study habits and grades, the project director reported.
  • It also allowed tutors to follow each student's progress through a full term.
