The Challenge of Substance Abuse: Ten Years of Grantmaking

The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation made reducing the harm caused by substance abuse one of its goals in 1991. Since then, we have pursued six strategies to build capacity and support for substance abuse treatment and prevention: provide long-term support for innovative institutions; build public interest and support; establish community-based service and demonstration projects; create and communicate new knowledge; integrate prevention and treatment strategies into the legal and medical systems; and, develop careers in substance abuse fields.
